B. VOCABULARY
Now we are ready to make some very simple sentences in Ojibwemowin. For this lesson's sentences, we will only look at Verbs to see how well you can Conjugate them. Below you have ten Verbs. Usually, when English Verbs are introduced, they are given in what is called the "Infinitive Form"  -  "to sleep, to drink, to write."  However, in Ojibwemowin, Verbs are generally given in the Third Person, Singular Form, to make sure you see the vowel at the end. Remember - sometimes the last vowel drops off. Practice the words aloud!

Asking "Yes" or "No" Questions

Questions which require a "Yes" or "No" type answer can be asked using VAI Verbs. From the table above, one can say "You are hungry." by attaching the personal pronoun "Gi" to the Verb "bakade" -    Gibakade = "You are hungry." Now, to ask a question, simply place the Question Particle "na" after the statement. Gibakade na? = "Are you hungry?"

This can be used on any person using VAI Verbs. If the Verb ends in a vowel, as it is above, use the Particle "na." If the verb ends in a consonant, use the Particle "ina." For our study, always place the Particle second in the sentence. You will have an opportunity to practice this below.
